John 18:37  For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come in the world - to bear witness to the truth.

Jesus did not hold back when questioned by Pilate. It cost him his life, but life for Jesus was not nearly so important as pointing beyond himself to the kingdom of God the Father. He said that he had come into the world "to bear witness to the truth." He went on to say, "Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice" (John 18:37). We know what Pilate said next: "What is truth?" (John 18:38).

I don't think it's possible to come into this final week of Lent without thinking that the world is still asking the question, "What is truth?" I also think it's possible to think of Jesus dying on the cross and not want to shout out, "There's the Truth. It's Jesus dying there for me."

And the Truth had made us free.
