1 John 3:1-3
John begins with an invitation to look — "See what kind of love." Not merely a love that pities from a distance, but a love that takes us into the family. The Father has given us a name: children of God. And John will not let us treat it as a wish or a hope for later. He adds three plain words: "and so we are." Present tense. Already true. Not because we feel it on any given morning, not because our lives are tidy, but because God has said it.
That is the ground a Christian stands on when everything else shifts. The world may not recognize us — John says as much, and he is not surprised by it. The world did not recognize the Father's own Son either. The family resemblance shows up as a cross before it shows up as glory. So when the world looks past you, or misunderstands you, or treats your faith as a quaint thing, that is not evidence that you are outside the family. It is the ordinary way the family has always been received.
Then John does something honest. He tells us there is more that we do not know. "What we will be has not yet appeared." We are children now, and we are also waiting. The full shape of our future is hidden, but its center is not: "we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is." The seeing does the making. When Christ appears, the sight of Him will finish what grace started — sin put away, the body raised, the image of God restored without remainder.
Notice how John joins the already and the not-yet in a single breath. We are God's children now. We shall be like him. The first is yours this morning. The second is coming, and it is as sure as the promise of the One who made it.
And then the pastoral turn. "Everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure." Hope is not passive. The person who truly expects to see Christ does not shrug at sin; he sets it aside. Not to earn the family name, but because the family name is real. Purity here is not a grim self-improvement project — it is the natural work of a heart that is looking forward. Fix your eyes on the One who is pure, and the looking will begin to change you.
