"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." β€” Philippians 4:4–7

Paul writes these words from a prison cell. That matters. This is not the cheerfulness of a man whose circumstances have improved β€” it is the joy of a man who has learned that his circumstances were never the source of his joy. He is chained, guarded, awaiting a verdict, and still he says: rejoice. Not "rejoice when it gets better." Rejoice always.

That is a strange command, and Paul knows it. So he ties it to something solid rather than to a feeling: "The Lord is at hand." Not far off. Not waiting for us to clean ourselves up first. Near. In the incarnation, God did not stay at a distance from our suffering β€” He entered it, took it on, and carried it to a cross. The nearness of Christ is the ground on which rejoicing stands.

Then comes the turn that makes this passage so precious to anxious hearts. Paul does not say "stop worrying." He says, do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer… let your requests be made known to God. The alternative to anxiety is not willpower. It is prayer. And not prayer as a last resort, but prayer that brings everything β€” the diagnosis, the bill, the child, the loneliness, the thing you haven't told anyone.

Notice also the small, easy-to-skip phrase: "with thanksgiving." Thanksgiving in the middle of the request. Not because the situation is good, but because the God who hears it is.

And then the promise β€” not that the problem disappears, but that "the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."Guard is a military word. Paul, chained to a Roman soldier, would have watched a sentry stand his post all night. God's peace does that around the heart.
